Aweer Wooden Spoon (OMC 1960.698.001a)

This spoon carved of wood with a teardrop shaped bowls made by the Aweer, also known as the Boni, people of Somalia.

The Aweer live in both Southern Somalia and Eastern Kenya. They traditionally practice hunting and gathering. Hunting for food involved hunting giraffes, antelopes, and dik-dik (a small animal in the antelope family living in Eastern Africa). The Aweer language is considered an endangered language with approximately 200known speakers.

International Driller Charles Wallen brought back the spoon from Somaliland in the early 20th Century.
